Oscar is twelve and lives in San Miguel, El Salvador. Oscar attends school in the afternoon, but every morning, he wakes up at 5 a.m. and walks to his uncle’s house. Both his uncle and grandparents were born blind. Most people living in their community are also blind, and there are very few opportunities for work there.
Oscar walks his uncle to the bus station each morning. When they get onto a bus, Oscar’s uncle starts singing. Oscar guides him through the bus to collect tips from the passengers. Throughout the morning, Oscar leads his uncle from bus to bus, careful to select buses with enough people to make the trip profitable, but not so crowded that his uncle is unable to easily maneuver through the bus. Though Oscar’s uncle has found a way to earn an income, it is inconsistent and doesn’t guarantee that he will earn enough money to be able to feed his family.
