On a typical afternoon in January, a series of poor decisions nearly took Emilio Maradona’s life. The Maradona family lives in a trailer home park…
In Malawi, nine-year-old Christopher struggles to keep up in school, likely due to cognitive delays caused by ongoing nutritional deficiencies throughout his childhood. In California, eight-year-old Daniel needs to eat regular meals to stay focused in class.
These stories demonstrate that childhood hunger is not just a problem affecting children in developing nations. This is a crisis happening in our own neighborhoods, as well.
Daily health recommendations for boys Christopher and Daniel’s age suggest consuming 1,600-2,600 calories, and girls of the same age should consume 1,400-2,200 calories, depending on growth and activity level. Sadly, this is not always possible in many parts of the world, where food is scarce, and families face severe economic hardship and food insecurity.
The Impact of Nutrition on Cognitive Development
Cognitive development begins in the womb and continues to grow and change as a child grows. A child’s brain forms millions of neural connections every second, and proper nutrition is critical for building and maintaining these connections.
- A healthy toddler explores her world and starts using words and gestures to express herself.
- A toddler who has experienced severe malnutrition is less likely to show exploratory behavior.
- A healthy four-year-old becomes a knight when he finds a long stick in the woods.
- A child who has experienced severe malnutrition is more likely to experience apathy and be less likely to explore and play.
- A healthy ten-year-old begins to develop logical thinking.
- A child who has experienced prolonged malnutrition is more likely to have difficulty paying attention, may struggle with memory, and have difficulty learning new things.
A Faith-Based Response to Childhood Hunger
But there is hope!
Depending on the severity of the deficiency and the age of intervention, it is possible to address childhood malnutrition. With proper nutrition and a supportive environment, children experiencing early nutritional deficiencies can have the opportunity to catch up and thrive.
At Children’s Hunger Fund, our church partners worldwide seek out families in their communities struggling to provide basic necessities and reach out to them with the gift of food. Through the Food Pak program, pastors and church volunteers deliver food directly to the family’s home, opening the door to long-term relationships, encouragement, prayer, and the hope of the gospel.
The gift of a Food Pak is more than a meal—it is a message that they are seen and loved.
