How Gospel-Centered Mercy Ministry Changed Paul’s Family for the Better

This blog post, “Changed for the Better,” shares how Paul, the oldest of three children living in a slum area of Kampala, Uganda, looks after his younger sisters while their mother, Agatha, struggles to provide for them by selling vegetables in the market. When members from Gaba Community Church discovered their fragile home of wooden walls and a plastic sheet roof, they brought Food Paks and shared the hope of the gospel, meeting the family’s immediate needs and strengthening their physical health. Through ongoing mercy ministry visits, Agatha has come to faith in Christ, is learning work skills, and now believes that nothing is impossible with God, while Paul dreams of becoming a pastor—evidence that their lives have truly been changed for the better.

From Honduras to a Bigger Garage: How Children’s Hunger Fund Grew to Deliver Hope Worldwide

Our story, A Bigger Garage: The Story of Children’s Hunger Fund, began when God broke Dave Phillips’ heart for the poor in a run-down hospital in Honduras, where impoverished children facing terminal cancer were met with basic care and the love of Christ. From those early days of storing donated medicine and food in Dave and Lynn’s garage to becoming the largest food distribution warehouse still standing after the Northridge Earthquake, God has continually expanded our capacity to deliver hope to suffering children by equipping local churches for gospel-centered mercy ministry. Today, what started as one couple’s desire to alleviate the suffering of children and encourage the church to serve the poor has grown into partnerships with churches in 29 countries, thousands of volunteers, and what feels, in Dave’s words, like God “just keeps giving us a bigger garage.”

From Food Pak to Salon Owner: How the Local Church Is Sustaining Hope in Uganda

Rosie’s story shows how God is sustaining hope in Uganda through the local church and faithful partners. Once trapped in poverty, abuse, and hopelessness in Kawempe near the Kimombasa slum, she encountered Pastor Eddie and Bible Gospel Church Kawempe through a simple offering of food and the gospel, which led to a transformed life and a new career in hairdressing. Through the Uganda Mercy Network and Children’s Hunger Fund’s long-standing partnership since 2002, Rosie moved from receiving Food Paks to owning a salon and now joyfully delivers food and job training to other vulnerable women, multiplying hope in one of Kampala’s hardest places. As we at Children’s Hunger Fund continue delivering hope to suffering children by equipping local churches for gospel-centered mercy ministry, stories like Rosie’s remind us why the Mercy Center, Food Pak ministry, and our partners in Uganda matter so deeply.
