Ramona Torrez’s story shows how turning gratitude into service can transform a suffering family in Honduras as they receive Food Paks, grow in faith through their local church, and begin serving others despite hardship. Through the gospel-centered mercy ministry of Pastor Ponce and Children’s Hunger Fund, this once-struggling family now delivers hope to other children as Fernando teaches Bible lessons and his wife serves in Sunday school.
Our story, A Bigger Garage: The Story of Children’s Hunger Fund, began when God broke Dave Phillips’ heart for the poor in a run-down hospital in Honduras, where impoverished children facing terminal cancer were met with basic care and the love of Christ. From those early days of storing donated medicine and food in Dave and Lynn’s garage to becoming the largest food distribution warehouse still standing after the Northridge Earthquake, God has continually expanded our capacity to deliver hope to suffering children by equipping local churches for gospel-centered mercy ministry. Today, what started as one couple’s desire to alleviate the suffering of children and encourage the church to serve the poor has grown into partnerships with churches in 29 countries, thousands of volunteers, and what feels, in Dave’s words, like God “just keeps giving us a bigger garage.”
