Jacob
Jacob is the eighth of nine children in his family. The family lives in a poor, urban neighborhood in the Philippines. Though the community is crowded, the neighbors are friendly. One neighbor has a water pump that Jacob’s family can use to meet most of their daily needs. However, drinking water must be purchased, as the water from this pump is not safe to drink.
With so many mouths to feed, Jacob’s mother works several part-time jobs to help feed her family. In addition to her job washing clothes, she works as a masseuse and sells produce. Jacob’s father is a construction worker. Yet, even with their combined income, they face a daily struggle to feed all nine children. Although the family eats three meals a day, each portion is small when every meal is split eleven ways.
