Micaela’s small home clings to the eroding ravine edge on the outskirts of Guatemala City, where volcanic soil, heavy rains, and earthquakes constantly threaten to undo what little stability her family possesses. Yet in this precarious place in Guatemala, month after month, believers from Moriah Christian Church climb the steep path to her door, bringing Food Paks, prayer, and the gospel that has transformed her fear into a living confession that “Jesus Christ is everything to me.”
Seven-year-old Nelson Ponce lives in the remote highlands of Pachaconas, Peru, where his family once struggled with poverty, alcohol abuse, and instability. Through the regular visits of Dina Rojas Cusi, who brings Food Paks and shares the gospel, Nelson’s parents, Justo and Marcelina, came to faith in Christ and left their old habits behind. Now their home is marked by prayer, Bible study, and active involvement in their local church, as God uses simple acts of mercy to bring deep spiritual and family transformation.
On the outskirts of Lilongwe City, Malawi, lies a densely populated township called Chinsapo, where Rhoda takes on whatever small jobs she can find to earn a modest wage. At their age, Rhoda and her husband should only worry about taking care of themselves, but instead they are responsible for feeding not only their adult children but also their grandchildren. When Pastor Denis Banda of Narrow Way Bible Church learned about Rhoda and her family, he reached out to them with Food Paks provided by donations from Children’s Hunger Fund, and over time, Rhoda’s heart softened toward him and the message he shared. Despite her Muslim background, Rhoda identifies as a Christian and believes that Jesus is the only way, regularly attending church with two of her grandchildren as church members volunteer to translate services from English into Chichewa so that families like hers can better understand what is being taught.
Around the world, millions of children face a daily struggle most of us can barely imagine—simply getting enough to eat, especially in the first five years of life when a child’s brain develops more rapidly than at any other period. Without consistent, nourishing food—enough calories along with essential protein, fat, vitamins, and minerals—children risk permanent cognitive impairments, weakened immune systems, stunted growth, and emotional delays, but through Food Paks delivered by local churches, Children’s Hunger Fund helps kids grow, learn, and thrive with both physical nourishment and the life-giving power of the gospel.
Beyond the Plate: How Nutritional Support Restores Potential shares the stories of children like Christopher in Malawi and Daniel in California to show that childhood hunger and food insecurity affect kids both globally and in our own neighborhoods. The post explains how proper nutritional support fuels cognitive development, restores play and focus, and, through Children’s Hunger Fund’s Food Pak program, becomes a faith-based response that brings gospel-centered mercy ministry, long-term relationships, and hope to families in need.
This blog post, “Changed for the Better,” shares how Paul, the oldest of three children living in a slum area of Kampala, Uganda, looks after his younger sisters while their mother, Agatha, struggles to provide for them by selling vegetables in the market. When members from Gaba Community Church discovered their fragile home of wooden walls and a plastic sheet roof, they brought Food Paks and shared the hope of the gospel, meeting the family’s immediate needs and strengthening their physical health. Through ongoing mercy ministry visits, Agatha has come to faith in Christ, is learning work skills, and now believes that nothing is impossible with God, while Paul dreams of becoming a pastor—evidence that their lives have truly been changed for the better.
Serving from the Heart follows Arjun in the Philippines, Varuj in Armenia, and Pastor Ko Htut Ye in Myanmar as they deliver Food Paks to families facing poverty, conflict, and isolation, building trust through serving from the heart and sharing the gospel in some of the world’s hardest places. Through their personal stories—each having suffered similarly to those they now serve—the blog shows how Children’s Hunger Fund uses practical help and God’s word to bring hope, form deep relationships, and make disciples among families in Bacolod City, in container houses in Armenia, and in war-torn villages in northern Myanmar.
At Children’s Hunger Fund, Volunteer Appreciation Month is a powerful reminder of the many reasons to volunteer at Children’s Hunger Fund—from packing Food Paks and learning perseverance and collaboration, to turning gratitude into service and playing a small role in gospel-centered mercy ministry that delivers hope to suffering children around the world. No volunteer is too young or too old to be part of something bigger, helping local churches build relationships, change lives, and show Christlike love to families in need.
