If they hadn’t come, I wouldn’t understand my purpose. Sitting outside the ruins of his childhood home, destroyed by a typhoon, Arjun Blaza reflects on…
In November 2024, a handwritten letter arrived in the Children’s Hunger Fund lockbox from a young supporter named Isaac. He had visited CHF a few times and was moved to write a letter to Founder and President Dave Phillips after seeing an update about the Dallas expansion in our monthly newsletter.
You can read his letter below:

Isaac’s letter was passed along to Co-founders Dave and Lynn Phillips, who were touched by his dedication to pray for the ministry.
In February, Isaac sent his second letter:

One of CHF’s five distinctives that guide the ministry is impacting the next generation. After receiving several letters from a child—all of which included Scripture—that expressed his support for the ministry, Lynn knew she had to reach out to him. She called Isaac to thank him for his letters and for praying for the ministry.
The following month, he sent another letter:

Isaac sent another letter on April 2, 2025:

Lynn emailed Isaac’s mom to ask a little more about Isaac and how he heard about CHF. Isaac emailed her back in April:
Hello Mrs. Phillips,
I am 10 years old and in 4th grade. We got connected to CHF when we went on a field trip to the Poverty Encounter with our homeschool group. I was surprised to see how kids in other countries lived and didn’t have much food. I think CHF is very important to kids who have nothing. I remember learning about the brick yards in Nepal. I love that you give them not only food but share the gospel with them. They are being fed both physically and spiritually.
John 6:35
Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.”
We would love to meet you and volunteer at the Poverty Encounter again.
Sincerely,
Isaac Mascorro
Lynn was deeply moved to see such a sincere response from someone so young. Realizing that Isaac not only understood the struggles faced by children in poverty but also took it personally and decided to act left a strong impression on her. His letters—which she keeps in her office—serve as a powerful reminder of how these experiences can influence people, and Lynn feels very thankful to see a new generation motivated to make a difference.
“It’s incredible when you talk to kids who have gone through Poverty Encounter, and you hear their ‘aha’ moment when they realize that kids around the world don’t live the same way they do,” Lynn shared.
Thanks to Poverty Encounter and our longstanding partnership with AnswersVBS, a majority of CHF’s donors are actually children. “What surprises me most is our young supporters, when they come to understand that they have a part to play,” Lynn shared. “You don’t always know what seeds are being planted. Even when you don’t see it, God is at work.”

Isaac, his mother, and his two brothers visited Poverty Encounter in December and had the chance to meet Dave and Lynn in person for the first time. Although their drive to CHF was long, they were excited to come and volunteer. While they initially connected with Poverty Encounter through their homeschool group, this was their first time coming solely to volunteer.
Isaac asked Lynn and Dave if he could continue writing them letters, and their response was—of course—yes. It’s always a blessing to see the next generation embracing their ability to make a difference in the world in Jesus’ name, and Isaac’s letters are a tangible reminder of how God continues to work in the hearts of the next generation.
