On March 28, 2025, a 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck the Sagaing Region of Myanmar. The epicenter was near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city. Just minutes after the initial quake, while people were still in a state of panic, the city was rocked by a 6.4 magnitude aftershock. Over the next 11 days, there were 98 recorded aftershocks with magnitudes ranging from 2.8 to 7.5.
With the country in chaos and the death toll rising, the ongoing conflict between the military junta that seized power in the 2021 coup and resistance forces has intensified. This unrest has created roadblocks for distributing humanitarian aid.
Yet, as the earthquake added another layer of complexity to Myanmar’s already volatile political landscape, one source of stability remained, able to respond to the people’s needs with compassion and hope: the local church.
With a recent emergency relief grant of $21,500 from Children’s Hunger Fund, our partners were able to quickly respond to the need, providing food and other resources while sharing the hope of the gospel with those affected by the earthquake.
Our in-country coordinator, Silas Van Duh Hmung, shared this note of gratitude:
In the midst of this natural disaster, we thank the Lord for CHF and its donors for your financial donation to those affected by the earthquake.
Our team at Expository Preaching & Teaching Academy and Kayuna Center was able to go and deliver Food Paks and some family-related items. Five other churches were also involved in the work. Without those local churches, we would not be able to do much. We thank the Lord for this cooperation. Thus, we were able to deliver hope to some five hundred families.
We believe that our efforts in delivering Food Paks and family-related items will make an evangelistic impact on those who receive them. We will continue to keep in touch with those churches, and in the future, God willing, we can go visit those churches and reconnect with the families.
The local church continues to be a beacon of hope and stability amid chaos, uniquely positioned to respond to both physical and spiritual needs. These faithful men and women are doing more than delivering food—they are delivering hope, comfort, and the life-saving message of the gospel.
The support of our friends and donors is what makes this possible. Whether it is an earthquake, a typhoon, a hurricane, or a wildfire, when disaster strikes, your generosity allows faithful pastors and church volunteers to be first responders, meeting urgent needs and opening doors for the gospel
Will you consider giving toward emergency relief today? Together, we can equip the local church to bring lasting hope when it’s needed most.
