Seeds of Hope

Seeds of Hope for Kids in Oklahoma

How does CHF provide for children in need in ways that last them a lifetime?  Through our growing network of churches, businesses, and community organizations that work together to change lives in the name of Christ. One of these is the Kaleo Foundation, who has a mission to serve underprivileged children in the state of Oklahoma and surrounding areas.

This past spring, a plentiful supply of seeds from Livingston Seed Co. was provided to CHF, who sent them along to the Kaleo Foundation. The Kaleo volunteers utilized the seeds to establish a garden project to help impoverished children at Kaiser Elementary School in Oklahoma City. “The school has a very low academic rating,” said Samuel Walker, CEO of Kaleo, “and gardens are known to raise standardized test scores by 12-15% when the children are involved in the gardening. This project is an effort to encourage the teachers, inspire the kids, and nourish the neighborhood.”

During summer when school was out, Kaleo volunteers tilled old, overgrown beds that were located on the school property. They planted seeds indoors, raised starter plants, and transferred them to the prepared beds. But when summer fruit and vegetables began to grow, the garden was repeatedly vandalized. Melons, squash, and tomatoes were pulled and thrown against the building and sidewalks.

Volunteers felt discouraged. But God was already using the project for His good work!  On the brink of giving up, Kaleo contacted the school principal. “What we hadn’t known was that teachers had been holding classes in the garden. Children had already picked hundreds of tomatoes, cucumbers, cantaloupes, and peppers. Many had been eaten right on the spot!”

Mr. Walker continued, “We conducted a morning in-service with the teachers where we explained our proposed layout for a fall garden and an herb garden. We provided additional seed, handouts, and other items.  When we returned that evening, they had already taken their classes out to plant the seeds they’d been given that morning!”

This garden project is making a difference for impoverished kids as they: learn to grow and eat healthy, fresh foods; plan, work hard, and take care of something important; spend time outdoors and experience God’s creation. Thank you, Kaleo volunteers and Livingston Seed Co. Your partnership with CHF and your commitment to help your community is changing children’s lives.
