May* is too young to remember the horrors of Cyclone Nargis, but her family will never forget how the storm devastated their community and large swaths of their country.
When Cyclone Nargis hit the coast of Myanmar in May 2008, over 140,000 people perished. An estimated 2.4 million people were affected by the storm, losing homes, businesses, and crops. It was the worst natural disaster in the recorded history of the country.
Children’s Hunger Fund provided disaster relief to the regions most affected. In addition to food, vitamins, and medicine, they provided fishing communities with boats and nets to replace what had been lost.
It’s been seven years since the disaster, yet thousands like May and her family still live in temporary shelters. An estimated 300,000 people live in their community, most in utter poverty.
Now May’s family receives two Food Paks each month from a local church that is part of Children’s Hunger Fund’s Mercy Network in Myanmar.
This Mercy Network is growing as new churches and volunteers are trained and more effectively reach out to children and families in crisis. Pastor Tin, a Mercy Network pastor, shared, “We are excited about how this [Mercy Network] will help us reach people for Jesus.”
Please join us in praying for little May, her family, and the hundreds of thousands of children and families in poverty in Myanmar.
• Pray for May and her family to receive the food and resources they desperately need.
• Pray for Pastor Tin and the other pastors and volunteers in the Mercy Network as they deliver hope and share the gospel.
• Pray for many to find everlasting hope through faith in Jesus Christ.
