Container of Food Paks reaches Cebu, Philippines
On the first day of 2016, a sea container of Food Paks reached Cebu, Philippines, where it was used by CHF’s Mercy Network there to feed and aid families living in poverty.
First Project Food Pak in Atlanta, at Lawrenceville Church of God
In April, Atlanta held its first ever Project Food Pak at Lawrenceville Church of God, where members of the congregation took empty Food Paks home to fill. The church was able to fill a total of 111 boxes, which could feed 444 individuals in the Southeast region.
After a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck the coastal portion of Ecuador, it left over 600 dead, and over 12,000 displaced. Children’s Hunger Fund was able to respond by sending Manna Paks from our partners at Feed My Starving Children to feed those affected by the disaster.
Mariners Mobile Food Pak
At one of the largest Mobile Food Paks of the year, CHF staff visited the Southern California campus of Mariners Church in Newport, where the 560 volunteers packed 1,819 international Food Paks for the Philippines, and 2,332 Food Paks for Southern California.
2016 brought growth for our Southwest region, with the opening of the new Dallas distribution center. In the spring, Dallas experienced a number of firsts, including it’s first church distribution, and it’s first volunteer work day, with the help of staff from la Madeleine Country French Café restaurants.
Kenya Mercy Network Launches
As a part of CHF’s expansion in sub-Saharan Africa, spring brought the launch of our Kenya Mercy Network. Based out of Nairobi, 5 churches began receiving support to feed local families, making it our 6th African Mercy Network at the time.
La Madeleine Country French Café Raises $338,000 for Hearts of Hope Campaign
la Madeleine Country French Café, a Dallas-based restaurant and bakery with over 80 locations nationwide, partnered with Children’s Hunger Fund in May with the goal of raising 1.2 million meals. During the entire month, they donated $1 for every cookie purchased in cafés, and guests who donated $5 to the cause received a gift card worth over $20. The company surpassed its goal and raised a total of $338,000.
Prestonwood High School Choir Ministry Serves at LA Distribution Center
During the summer, the Los Angeles distribution center had the unique opportunity to host a group of 200 youth from Prestonwood Church, which is located out of Plano, TX. The group served at Children’s Hunger Fund and helped bag beans for international families.
South Africa Mercy Network Launches
During the summer, the 7th African Mercy Network launched out of South Africa, a country still recovering from the polarizing effects of the apartheid government that ended in 1994. 30 churches were trained and equipped to receive product for Relational Mercy Ministry.
Legacy1 Memorial Mobile Food Pak
In the wake of the murder of Texas high school senior, Emilee Hurst, a CHF Mobile Food Pak was held in her honor at Judson High School, where 400 volunteers packed 2,000 Food Paks for local families.
The Master’s University Volunteers During Their Week of Welcome
For the fifth year in a row, nearly 400 freshmen and transfer students from The Master’s University joined CHF at our Los Angeles distribution center to learn about our ministry, and to package 1,611 bags of dried fruit.
USANA Convention Mobile Food Pak
For the second year in a row, Children’s Hunger Fund joined USANA at their annual international convention in Salt Lake City, where nearly 650 volunteers packed 3,200 Food Paks to go to families in need.
As the number of churches in CHF’s Midwest Mercy Network grew in places like St. Louis, Chicago, and Twin Cities, there was a need for updated facilities to host Rethink Mercy conferences and volunteer work days. With the generosity of volunteers and donors, a newly renovated training space was completed in August, which allowed for a time of rededication and prayer.
Ecuador Mercy Network Launches
After working with partners in Ecuador for a number of months to work out the details of starting a Mercy Network, the Ecuador network was launched in September of this year, to equip 15 churches with resources to feed, aid and connect families in their communities.
First Spanish Rethink Mercy Equipping in Chicago
In early October, the Midwest region held its first-ever Spanish Rethink Mercy conference, where 94 attendees representing 17 churches from Chicago and the surrounding suburbs learned what Relational Mercy Ministry looks like from a Biblical perspective.
Hurricane Matthew Hits Haiti
In the wake of devastation from Hurricane Matthew in Haiti, Children’s Hunger Fund has been able to respond with containers of food, and financial support to help our partners on the ground.
During the month of November, Children’s Hunger Fund asked supporters to host their own FriendsGiving, during which individuals could host a gathering of friends, and share their passion for CHF and our mission to deliver hope.
Ethiopia Mercy Network Launches
After a CHF staff trip to the country to train and equip pastors in Ethiopia for gospel-centered mercy ministry, the groundwork had been laid to officially start the Ethiopia Mercy Network, consisting of 10 churches able to support 60 families.
Domestic Mercy Network churches increase from 202 to 288
God brought both international and domestic growth in the churches CHF supports in 2016. In the course of 12 months, a combined 86 churches were added to the West, Midwest, Southwest, and Southeast Mercy Networks. That’s a growth of 42%!
